No. Sushi combines raw fish, seasoned rice, soy sauce, wasabi and nori — several hazards in one bite.

Why it’s a problem

Raw fish can carry parasites and bacteria, including the one behind salmon poisoning disease in dogs. The rice is seasoned with vinegar and sugar, soy sauce is extremely salty, and wasabi irritates the stomach. Some rolls add avocado, which is harmful too.

How to serve it safely

Do not share sushi. If you want to treat your dog, set aside plain cooked fish before any seasoning — that is the dog-safe version of the meal.

Warning signs to watch for

Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and, with raw salmon or trout, fever and swollen lymph nodes a week later — salmon poisoning disease.

When to call the vet

If your dog eats raw sushi fish and becomes ill within the following week, see a vet immediately and say raw fish was eaten.

Common questions

Is plain sashimi okay?

No — it is still raw fish. Cooking is what makes fish safe.

What about cooked rolls like shrimp tempura?

The shrimp is cooked, but the roll brings fried batter, rice seasoning and sauce. There is no version worth sharing.
