Can Dogs Eat Chocolate?

☠️ Toxic
⚠️ Educational info only. If your pet just ate something and looks unwell, skip the reading and call your vet or Pet Poison Helpline (US): (855) 764-7661.
No. Chocolate is toxic to dogs and dark chocolate can be lethal in small amounts.

Why it’s a problem

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs metabolize very slowly. The darker the chocolate, the more theobromine — baker’s chocolate and cocoa powder are the most dangerous, milk chocolate needs larger amounts, and even a small bar of dark chocolate can poison a small dog.

How to serve it safely

Never feed chocolate or anything containing cocoa. Keep chocolate, cocoa powder and chocolate baked goods out of reach — dogs find and eat whole bars.

Warning signs to watch for

Vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, rapid breathing, muscle tremors, increased heart rate and seizures, usually within 6 to 12 hours.

When to call the vet

Contact a vet or pet poison hotline immediately if your dog eats any chocolate. Treatment is most effective before symptoms start.

Common questions

My dog ate one chocolate chip — should I panic?

One milk chocolate chip is very unlikely to harm even a small dog. Watch for symptoms, and call your vet with your dog’s weight and the type of chocolate for peace of mind.

Is white chocolate dangerous?

White chocolate contains almost no theobromine, but it is still fatty sugar — not a treat worth giving.
