Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter?

Yes, but only unsweetened xylitol-free peanut butter, and only in small amounts.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Plain peanut butter is a good source of protein and healthy fats, and most dogs love it. The danger is xylitol, a sugar substitute used in some "no sugar added" brands — even a small amount of xylitol causes rapid hypoglycemia and liver failure in dogs.

How to serve it safely

Check the label: the only ingredients should be peanuts (and maybe salt). Give no more than a teaspoon for a medium dog, ideally smeared in a lick mat or puzzle toy.

Warning signs to watch for

If xylitol was eaten: vomiting, weakness, wobbliness, collapse or seizures within 30 to 60 minutes. High fat in general can also trigger pancreatitis in sensitive dogs.

When to call the vet

If a product containing xylitol was eaten, go to a vet immediately — do not wait for symptoms.

Common questions

Which brands are xylitol-free?

Read the ingredient list every time — xylitol also appears as "birch sugar". When in doubt, choose plain unsalted peanut butter with a single ingredient.
