Can Dogs Eat Salt?
Why it’s a problem
Dogs need some sodium, but their food already supplies it. Excess salt draws water out of cells, including brain cells, causing hypernatremia — salt toxicosis. Big offenders are salty snacks, cured meats, play dough, and drinking seawater or rock-salt melt water.
How to serve it safely
Keep salty snacks to yourself, provide fresh water at all times, and rinse paws after winter walks where rock salt is used — dogs lick it off.
Warning signs to watch for
Excessive thirst and urination, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, wobbliness and seizures in severe cases.
When to call the vet
If your dog eats a large amount of salty food or drinks seawater and starts vomiting or trembling, see a vet promptly.
Common questions
Can dogs eat chips or pretzels?
One plain chip is unlikely to hurt, but salty snacks as a habit risk sodium overload — and seasoned chips can hide onion or garlic powder.
Is rock salt dangerous on walks?
Yes. It irritates paws and is toxic when licked off. Rinse paws after winter walks and consider dog-safe de-icers.
