Can Dogs Eat Poppy Seeds?
Why it’s a problem
Poppy seeds contain small amounts of codeine and morphine, and the poppy plant itself appears on toxic-plant lists for dogs. A heavy dusting on a bagel is unlikely to poison a large dog, but a dog that eats raw seeds, seed heads or a quantity of baked goods can be genuinely sedated, and there is no established safe dose.
How to serve it safely
Keep poppy seed bagels, muffins and cakes away from dogs, and do not grow edible poppies where dogs roam. If a few seeds from a bun were licked up, the risk is low.
Warning signs to watch for
Lethargy, wobbliness, pinpoint pupils, slow breathing, loss of appetite and depression, usually within a few hours.
When to call the vet
If your dog eats a meaningful amount of poppy seeds or seed heads and becomes drowsy or wobbly, call a vet immediately.
Common questions
My dog ate a poppy seed bagel — should I worry?
One bagel’s worth of seeds rarely causes serious poisoning, but watch for drowsiness or wobbliness for several hours and call your vet if any appear.
Is this like opioid poisoning in humans?
Similar in principle — the alkaloids depress the nervous system — but doses from seeds are usually small. Quantity and dog size decide severity.
