A few plain pine nuts are not toxic, but their fat and price make them a treat dogs do not need.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Pine nuts are non-toxic to dogs, but they are among the fattiest nuts, and frequent feeding adds real pancreatitis risk. They usually arrive in pesto — which contains garlic, another hazard — or salted and roasted mixes. There is no nutritional benefit a balanced dog food does not already provide.

How to serve it safely

If you want to share, a few plain unsalted kernels sprinkled on food occasionally is the ceiling. Never pesto, salted versions or nut mixes.

Warning signs to watch for

Eating a quantity brings vomiting, diarrhea and, in fat-sensitive dogs, hunched belly pain from pancreatitis within a day or two.

When to call the vet

If your dog gets into a bag of pine nuts or pesto and starts vomiting repeatedly, call your vet.

Common questions

Can dogs eat pesto?

No. Pesto almost always contains garlic and often pine nuts and parmesan — the garlic alone makes it off-limits for dogs.
