Can Dogs Eat Lobster?

A small taste of plain cooked lobster meat is fine — but it is rich, expensive and easy to skip.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Lobster meat is safe when plain and cooked, but it is high in sodium and cholesterol, and dogs usually get it dipped in butter. The shell is sharp and indigestible, and the effort of extracting a safe portion rarely matches the benefit.

How to serve it safely

One or two bites of plain cooked lobster meat — no butter, garlic or seasoning, and never any shell.

Warning signs to watch for

Shell fragments can cut the mouth or gut; buttery portions cause vomiting, diarrhea and possible pancreatitis.

When to call the vet

If shell was swallowed or vomiting continues after buttery lobster, call your vet.

Common questions

Can dogs eat raw lobster?

No — raw shellfish carries bacteria and parasites, and the shell is worse. Fully cooked meat only.

Can dogs have lobster bisque?

No — it is cream, butter, salt and usually onion or sherry. Every ingredient is against the dog.
