Yes. Plain cooked lentils are a safe, protein-rich legume used in many dog foods.

Why it’s fine

Cooked lentils deliver protein, iron, folate and a lot of fiber, and they are non-toxic — their lectins are destroyed by normal boiling, which is why lentil-based dog foods are widespread. Large servings cause gas and loose stools, and lentil soups and dahls usually carry onion, garlic and heavy spices that dogs cannot have.

How to serve it safely

Serve one to two tablespoons of plain cooked lentils with a meal. Cook them soft, with no onion, garlic, salt or spice — introduce slowly to limit gas.

When to call the vet

If lentils were eaten in a seasoned dish with onion or garlic, call your vet even before any symptoms show.

Common questions

Are lentils linked to heart disease in dogs?

Early FDA reports flagged grain-free diets heavy in legumes over possible links to DCM, but no cause has been proven. Feeding lentils as a topper, not the whole diet, is the sensible course.

Can dogs eat lentil soup?

No. Soup almost always contains onion and garlic, plus salt. Plain cooked lentils only.
