A lick will not poison, but lemonade is acid, sugar and sometimes xylitol — skip it.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Lemonade combines citric acid, which irritates dogs’ stomachs, with a heavy sugar load, and sugar-free lemonade often uses xylitol, which is deadly to dogs. The lemon flavor is aversive to most dogs anyway.

How to serve it safely

Keep cups out of reach, especially at picnics. If your dog licks a little regular lemonade, that is no emergency.

Warning signs to watch for

A few laps cause drooling and possible stomach upset; xylitol versions cause weakness and collapse within the hour.

When to call the vet

If sugar-free lemonade was drunk, go to a vet immediately — do not wait for symptoms.

Common questions

My dog likes lemons — is that odd?

A little unusual — most dogs hate citrus. Small amounts of lemon are not toxic, but the sugary drink is still a poor share.

Is lemon water okay?

Same rule — a weak splash is low risk, but there is no benefit worth the acidity.
