Can Dogs Eat Horseradish?
Why it’s a problem
Horseradish root releases allyl isothiocyanate when chewed — the vapor that makes eyes water — and in a dog’s stomach it causes real irritation, vomiting and diarrhea. Prepared horseradish sauces add cream, salt and sometimes onion or garlic, stacking more problems on top.
How to serve it safely
Keep horseradish root, prepared horseradish and horseradish sauce away from dogs. There is no dog-safe serving.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, gagging, pawing at the mouth, vomiting and diarrhea, starting within minutes of eating it.
When to call the vet
If your dog eats horseradish sauce and vomits repeatedly, call your vet — the sauce ingredients matter as much as the root.
Common questions
Is horseradish the same family as mustard?
Yes — both are Brassicaceae and both rely on isothiocyanates for their punch, which is why both irritate dogs.
My dog sneezed violently after sniffing it — serious?
The reaction passes quickly. Just move the root out of sniffing range and offer water.
