Can Dogs Eat Dragon Fruit?
Why it’s fine
Dragon fruit (pitaya) offers fiber, magnesium and antioxidants with a light sugar load, and its soft speckled flesh is easy to digest. The skin is leathery and not meant for eating, and the tiny black seeds pass through harmlessly.
How to serve it safely
Cut the fruit in half, scoop the flesh out of the skin, and cube it. A few spoonfuls make a nice novel treat.
When to call the vet
If a dog eats the skin and then vomits or strains, call your vet — the rind can be hard to pass.
Common questions
Can dogs eat dragon fruit seeds?
Yes. The tiny seeds are harmless and pass right through.
Red or white dragon fruit — does it matter?
Both varieties are equally safe; the red-fleshed one can tint urine or stool pink, which looks alarming but is harmless.
