Can Dogs Eat Coffee?
Why it’s a problem
Caffeine over-stimulates a dog’s nervous system and heart, and dogs metabolize it far slower than humans. Brewed coffee, espresso, grounds, beans, tea, energy drinks and diet pills all count, with grounds and pills being the most dangerous by weight.
How to serve it safely
Keep mugs, the coffee maker area, used grounds and K-cups out of reach — dogs love the smell of spent grounds. Never share milky coffee drinks.
Warning signs to watch for
Restlessness, rapid breathing, racing heart, muscle tremors, vomiting and seizures, usually within one to two hours.
When to call the vet
Any confirmed caffeine ingestion needs a vet or poison hotline call immediately — speed of treatment matters.
Common questions
My dog licked my coffee — is that serious?
A few licks of milky coffee are unlikely to poison, but watch for restlessness or tremors and call your vet if any appear.
What about coffee ice cream or mocha desserts?
They combine caffeine with fat and sugar. A lick is low risk; a whole bowl of caffeinated dessert is a vet call.
