Can Dogs Eat Chickpeas?
Why it’s fine
Cooked chickpeas provide fiber, plant protein, folate and manganese, and they are non-toxic to dogs; chickpea flour is a common grain-free dog food ingredient. Whole chickpeas are firm, so small dogs do better with them mashed. The warning applies to the dishes: hummus carries garlic and lemon, and fried or salted roasted chickpeas pile on fat and sodium.
How to serve it safely
Serve a tablespoon or two of plain boiled or rinsed canned chickpeas, mashed for small dogs. Never hummus or spiced roasted versions.
When to call the vet
Call your vet if your dog eats hummus — the garlic content matters more than the chickpeas.
Common questions
Why can dogs not eat hummus?
Most hummus recipes include garlic, which damages dog red blood cells, plus lemon, oil and salt. Plain chickpeas keep the benefits and drop the risk.
Are canned chickpeas okay?
Yes, if rinsed thoroughly to remove salt. Low-sodium cans are even better.
