Can Dogs Eat Artichokes?
Why it’s fine
Artichoke hearts provide fiber, folate and antioxidants, and cynarin — the compound that makes artichokes taste sweet — can cause extra gas in dogs. The spiky outer leaves, tough stem and fibrous choke are the hazards, not the flesh.
How to serve it safely
Steam or boil plain, then offer soft heart pieces cut small. Never marinated or oil-packed artichokes, which carry garlic and salt.
Warning signs to watch for
Too much causes gas and bloating; swallowed fibrous leaves or the choke can cause gagging and vomiting.
When to call the vet
If your dog gags on the fibrous choke or spiky leaves and cannot swallow comfortably, call your vet.
Common questions
Can dogs eat raw artichoke?
Not recommended — raw leaves are tough, spiky and hard to digest. Cooked hearts only.
Are canned artichoke hearts okay?
Rinse plain water-packed ones well; skip marinated versions entirely because of the garlic.
