Can Cats Eat Tortillas?

A corner of a plain tortilla is harmless, but it is pure empty carbohydrate.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Plain flour or corn tortillas contain nothing toxic to cats — just flour, water and fat in the flour versions. The problem is what tortillas wrap: taco fillings and burritos are loaded with onion, garlic, spices and cheese, all of which range from harmful to toxic for cats.

How to serve it safely

If your cat begs, a fingernail-sized piece of plain tortilla rarely is the limit. Never tortilla chips, which are fried and salted, or filled tortillas.

Warning signs to watch for

Vomiting or loose stools after larger amounts; fillings with onion or garlic can cause lethargy, pale gums and dark urine days later.

When to call the vet

Call your vet promptly if a cat eats taco or burrito fillings, which almost always contain alliums.

Common questions

Are corn tortillas better than flour?

Marginally — less fat, similar emptiness. Neither offers a carnivore anything worth eating.
