Can Cats Eat Cow’s Milk?
Why it’s a problem
The image of cats happily lapping milk is folklore. After weaning, most cats lose the enzyme that digests lactose, so cow’s milk ferments in their gut, causing gas, cramps and diarrhea. It adds calories with no benefit a proper cat food lacks.
How to serve it safely
Offer fresh water instead. If your cat tolerates dairy, a spoonful occasionally is low risk — but a purpose-made lactose-free "cat milk" is the safer indulgence.
Warning signs to watch for
Diarrhea, loose stools, gas and vomiting within 8 to 12 hours of drinking milk.
When to call the vet
Persistent diarrhea needs a vet visit, especially in kittens, who dehydrate quickly.
Common questions
What about kittens?
Kittens need their mother’s milk or a kitten milk replacer — never cow’s milk, which cannot replace queen’s milk nutritionally.
