Can Cats Eat Star Fruit?
Why it’s a problem
Star fruit (carambola) concentrates oxalic acid and caramboxin, a neurotoxin that is dangerous even in humans with reduced kidney function. A small cat’s kidneys are easily overwhelmed by the oxalate load, and no safe portion has been established for pets.
How to serve it safely
Never feed star fruit, and keep the fruit bowl — including the decorative slices on cocktails — out of a cat’s reach.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, vomiting, lethargy, wobbliness, muscle tremors, seizures and changes in urination, which can signal kidney injury.
When to call the vet
This is an emergency: go to a vet immediately if any star fruit was eaten, even a small slice.
Common questions
My cat licked a star fruit slice — should I worry?
A lick is low risk, but watch closely for drooling or wobbliness and call your vet with the details. This fruit has no established safe dose.
