Can Cats Eat Raw Fish?

🚫 Not Recommended

No. Raw fish can carry parasites and an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1 in cats.

Why it’s a problem

Many raw fish contain thiaminase, an enzyme that breaks down thiamine (vitamin B1); a cat eating raw fish regularly can develop severe thiamine deficiency. Raw fish also carries flukes and bacteria such as salmonella, and home freezing does not reliably eliminate the risk.

How to serve it safely

Always cook fish — heat destroys thiaminase and parasites. Keep sushi, sashimi and bait off counters.

Warning signs to watch for

Thiamine deficiency causes vomiting, appetite loss, a bent-down head and neck posture, wobbliness and seizures; parasites can cause chronic vomiting and weight loss.

When to call the vet

See a vet promptly after raw fish consumption if any neurological signs appear — thiamine deficiency is treatable but can be fatal untreated.

Common questions

Is sushi-grade fish safe then?

No. Grade refers to human freshness standards, not thiaminase or parasite safety for cats.

What about commercial raw diets with fish?

Properly formulated raw diets account for thiaminase and are tested — that is a different product from raw fish from the store.
