Can Cats Eat Pine Nuts?
Why it’s a sometimes-food
Pine nuts are not poisonous to cats, but like most nuts they are extremely high in fat, which can cause diarrhea and contributes to pancreatitis risk with regular feeding. Pesto is the dangerous form — it is built on garlic, which is toxic to cats even in small doses.
How to serve it safely
If sharing at all, a couple of plain unsalted pine nuts occasionally is the ceiling. Never food containing pesto.
Warning signs to watch for
Loose stools or vomiting after larger servings; pesto exposure can cause lethargy, pale gums and dark urine over days from garlic.
When to call the vet
Call your vet immediately if a cat eats pesto, even without symptoms, because garlic damage can be delayed.
Common questions
Are pine nuts safer than big nuts?
The small size removes choking risk but not the fat load. They are a lesser problem, not a good treat.
