Can Cats Eat Mussels?
Why it’s a sometimes-food
Cooked mussel meat provides protein, iron and omega-3s at a reasonable sodium level. The risks are the usual shellfish ones: raw mussels can carry bacteria and biotoxins from red tides, and restaurant mussels arrive drenched in garlic, wine and butter.
How to serve it safely
Offer one or two plain steamed mussels, removed from the shell and chopped, as an occasional treat.
Warning signs to watch for
Shellfish biotoxins and bacteria cause vomiting, diarrhea and weakness; buttery broth adds its own digestive insult.
When to call the vet
Call your vet if a cat vomits repeatedly after mussels or seems weak or uncoordinated.
Common questions
Can cats chew mussel shells?
No. Shell fragments can crack teeth, choke a cat or cut the gut. Meat only, always.
