Can Cats Eat Kiwi?
Why it’s a sometimes-food
Kiwi contains actinidin, a protein-digesting enzyme that irritates the mouth and gut of many cats, plus acidity that compounds the effect. Oddly, kiwi also contains actinidine, a compound related to catnip that makes some cats rub against and chew the fruit enthusiastically — which increases the dose.
How to serve it safely
Offer a small peeled slice of ripe kiwi rarely, and remove it if your cat starts treating it like a toy.
Warning signs to watch for
Drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting or diarrhea within hours; the irritation usually passes but can look dramatic.
When to call the vet
Call your vet if vomiting persists or the cat refuses food afterward.
Common questions
Why does my cat rub its face on kiwi?
Actinidine mimics the effect of catnip for some cats. The attraction is harmless, but eating the fruit is what causes the stomach upset.
