Can Cats Eat Coffee & Caffeine?
Why it’s a problem
Caffeine and related methylxanthines overstimulate a cat’s heart and nervous system, and cats clear them slowly. Coffee grounds and beans are the most concentrated form, but tea bags, cola, energy drinks and diet pills are all dangerous too.
How to serve it safely
Keep mugs out of counter-surfing range, bin grounds and tea bags in a covered can, and never leave caffeine pills where a cat could find one.
Warning signs to watch for
Restlessness, rapid breathing, racing heart, muscle tremors, vomiting and seizures, usually within a few hours.
When to call the vet
Contact a vet or pet poison hotline immediately after any caffeine ingestion.
Common questions
My cat licked my coffee — what now?
A tiny lick of milky coffee is low risk, but watch for restlessness or tremors and call your vet with the details.
What about decaf?
Decaf still contains a little caffeine, plus milk and sugar — nothing about it suits a cat.
