Can Cats Eat Chocolate?

☠️ Toxic
⚠️ Educational info only. If your pet just ate something and looks unwell, skip the reading and call your vet or Pet Poison Helpline (US): (855) 764-7661.
No. Chocolate is toxic to cats just as it is to dogs — cats are simply less likely to beg for it.

Why it’s a problem

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, methylxanthines that cats metabolize very slowly. Dark chocolate, baker’s chocolate and cocoa powder carry the highest doses; even a square of dark chocolate can seriously harm a small cat.

How to serve it safely

Never offer chocolate in any form, and store baking supplies and candy where a counter-walking cat cannot reach them.

Warning signs to watch for

Vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, rapid breathing, muscle tremors, racing heart and seizures, typically within 6 to 12 hours.

When to call the vet

Contact a vet or pet poison hotline immediately if any chocolate is eaten — treatment works best before symptoms begin.

Common questions

My cat licked chocolate frosting — should I worry?

A lick of milk-chocolate frosting is unlikely to harm, but call your vet with the amount and type for a proper risk assessment.

Is white chocolate safe then?

It has almost no theobromine, but it is still fat and sugar. Do not treat it as a safe option.
