Can Cats Eat Banana?

A small taste is safe, but bananas are pure sugar a cat’s body does not need.

Why it’s a sometimes-food

Banana flesh is non-toxic, but cats cannot taste sweetness and are obligate carnivores — sugar calories from fruit do nothing useful for them. The peel is indigestible and can cause vomiting or a blockage if eaten.

How to serve it safely

Offer at most a slice the size of your fingernail as a rare novelty, and never the peel.

Warning signs to watch for

Too much banana can cause vomiting, diarrhea or constipation; peel consumption may cause gagging or an obstruction.

When to call the vet

Call your vet if a cat eats peel and then vomits repeatedly or stops passing stool.

Common questions

Why does my cat lick my banana then?

Some cats are drawn to the smell — curiosity, not need. A lick is harmless.
