Can Cats Eat Almonds?
Why it’s a sometimes-food
Sweet almonds like those sold in stores are not toxic to cats, unlike bitter almonds which contain cyanide compounds. The problems are mechanical and dietary: the fat load can trigger diarrhea, a whole almond is a choking risk for a small mouth, and salted versions add sodium cats do not need.
How to serve it safely
If a cat is curious, offer a small broken piece of a plain unsalted almond rarely. Keep flavored and candied nuts away.
Warning signs to watch for
Vomiting, loose stools or gagging after eating several almonds; salted nuts can cause increased thirst.
When to call the vet
Call your vet if a cat eats a large quantity of almonds or chokes while chewing one.
Common questions
Are almonds related to the toxic bitter almond?
Store almonds are the sweet variety and safe in tiny amounts; bitter almonds with cyanogenic compounds are a different product that never reaches snack shelves.
